About Our Patron: Saint Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone in the early 1180s in Assisi, Italy, is one of the most beloved and revered saints in the Catholic Church. Known for his profound love of nature, deep humility, and unwavering commitment to a life of poverty, Francis transformed the way many people understand faith and service.

Born into a wealthy merchant family, Francis initially lived a life of privilege and comfort.

However, after a series of spiritual experiences and a calling to serve God more fully, he renounced his wealth and dedicated himself to living in simplicity and helping the poor and marginalized.  His radical embrace of poverty and his joyful reverence for all creation inspired countless followers and led to the founding of the Franciscan movement.

Saint Francis’ legacy is one of compassion, peace, and harmony with the natural world. He is remembered not only as a devoted servant of God but also as a protector of animals and the environment, often depicted preaching to birds and caring for the sick and outcast.

The Three Orders of Saint Francis

Saint Francis of Assisi founded three distinct religious orders, each embodying different aspects of his vision and mission:

1. The Order of Friars Minor (OFM)

Also known as the Franciscans, this order was established by Saint Francis himself to live out the Gospel through poverty, preaching, and service. The Friars Minor dedicate themselves to a life of simplicity, community living, and active ministry, often serving the poor, sick, and marginalized.

2. The Order of Saint Clare (Poor Clares)

Founded by Saint Clare of Assisi under the guidance of Saint Francis, this order is a contemplative community of women who embrace a life of prayer, poverty, and seclusion. The Poor Clares live in cloistered monasteries, focusing on spiritual devotion and intercession for the world.

3. The Third Order of Saint Francis

Also known as the Secular Franciscan Order, this branch is for laypeople who wish to live Franciscan spirituality while remaining in their everyday lives. Members commit to following the teachings of Saint Francis by practicing simplicity, humility, and charity in their families, workplaces, and communities.

(Prayer of St. Francis)
